HOW ARE PHOTOS SELECTED FOR THE GALLERY?

All submitted images are reviewed by a photo editor to determine inclusion in the gallery. We select high quality photographs of subjects that are of widespread interest to the Burning Man community and that feature unique aspects of the event. Images documenting art, themecamps, nature, costumes, performance, organized events, and compelling portraits with emotional intensity or beautiful composition and mood are preferred over snapshots of friends or groups of camp mates. Accepted images must be well composed, in focus, and contain recognizable and unobstructed subject matter. Please upload your best shots only - we don't use images that are out of focus, poorly composed, too dark or light, grainy, or indecipherable. We will not accept photos that depict sexual acts, illegal activities or product brands.

We can only accept a limited number of exceptional quality images of widely covered subjects (e.g. the Man and the night of the burn.) Before submitting images, please look carefully in the gallery to determine the number of existing photos of the subjects and for examples of desired photo quality levels.

PLEASE DO NOT SUBMIT ALL OF YOUR SHOTS! PLEASE EDIT YOUR SUBMISSIONS DOWN TO YOUR VERY BEST SHOTS ONLY.

Even if your photos are not selected for the gallery, all submitted images are retained as a valuable part of our digital archives, and we thank you for taking the time and effort to submit your images.

HOW CAN I SUBMIT PHOTOS?

First, read about the photo selection process above.

Second, if you have not already done so, register yourself as a photographer. Registering as a photographer is free. This system lets us display personal info like your name and e-mail address, without you having to enter the information for every submitted photo.

PLEASE WRITE DOWN YOUR USERNAME AND PASSWORD AND ALWAYS USE THE SAME ONES. DO NOT CREATE A SECOND LISTING FOR YOURSELF!!!!

It's entirely up to you how much contact information you want to display with your images, only your name is required. You can update your own information if it changes.

Third, create one large and one thumbnail 72dpi JPEG file for each image. The large image can have a maximum height and/or width of 500 pixels and must have a file size under 30k (this means 29k or less.) The thumbnail image can have a maximum height and/or width of 100 pixels and must have a file size under 10k (this means 9k or less.) There are a variety of freeware and shareware thumbnail generation tools available on the Internet to do this, or you can use most common photo editing software packages such as Fireworks, Image Ready, and PhotoShop. If available use the "Save for Web" function. If your image is rejected for being too large, check the file size with a few different programs to be sure that it is under the limit.

Fourth, go to the photographers' area and submit your images, adding a caption for each photo, and optionally, a list of keywords.

Image submissions are checked frequently and will be reviewed by an editor to determine if they will be displayed in the gallery.

WHY DO THE IMAGE FILES HAVE TO BE SO SMALL?

The Burning Man website reaches an audience of individuals all around the world. Some of these people do not have high speed Internet connections or the newest and fastest machines. We want everyone who visits the Image Gallery to be able to enjoy the photographs without having to wait for large image downloads.

The Image Gallery contains thousands of images, including those that are not accepted into the public gallery. The submitted image sizes were selected with considerations for server capacity, download speeds, and image quality. Maintaining a low image size while maintaining screen quality presentation also helps to protect both Burning Man and the photographers from having the images used without their consent for printed or commercial purposes.

I SUBMITTED IMAGES, WHY DON'T I SEE THEM IN THE GALLERY?

Image submissions are checked frequently and reviewed by an editor to determine if they will be displayed in the gallery. Please read about the photo selection process above. Generally, if it has been more than a week since your submission and you do not see your images, it is likely that they were not accepted into the Image Gallery.

If you received a message indicating that your submission was successful, we have received your images and there is no need to resubmit them.

Even if your photos are not selected for the gallery, all submitted images are retained as a valuable part of our digital archives, and we thank you for taking the time and effort to submit your images.

I LOST MY PASSWORD, WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Don't panic! Simply go to the photographer registration page and enter your login ID where it says "Lost your password?" The system will mail you a new randomized password to the e-mail address that is stored with your photographer information. You can then login to the system and change the password to whatever you want it to be.

It is important to keep your e-mail address up to date so you can manage your photographer account. Please avoid creating another login account as it will create two entries for you in our list of photographers, and you may develop a multiple personality disorder.
